Puerto Galera & Mindoro

Overview

Destination Puerto Galera & Mindoro

Puerto Galera is probably the Philippines best known diving bases and certainly one of the most popular in Asia Pacific. One of the first areas to really focus on diving related activities it has developed from a small fishing village to a lively holiday center which is based around some of the best diving in the region. The area now contains a range of accommodation from value guest houses and chalets through to high end luxury hideaways.

Located on Mindoro Island, Puerto Galera is just 2.5 hours road and boat journey from Manila and its proximity to the capital have made this a favourite destination for many guests. Puerto Galera itself is actually a small town nestled amongst a series of stunning forest lined bays overlooking the Verde Passage. Long used as a sanctuary for boats it is now home to a thriving sailing community.

The majority of guests come though for the sandy beaches and water based activities that are to be found on White Beach, Sabang and Small Lalaguna just outside Puerto Galera. It is here that the best Resorts, Restaurants and of course Dive Centers are to be found. This is a great place to stay for those looking for adventure both on and in the water and on land and there is something for everyone from diving and snorkeling to sailing and island hopping. There are cultural tours, hill climbing. Mountain biking and a whole range of other activities that can be arranged.

As both an activity and social based holiday this is hard to beat. The presence of so many dining and entertainment choices means that you can eat and socialize in a different venue every night - all within a short walk of your hotel or Resort.

The diving is World Class! Located at the heart of the Coral Triangle the waters around Puerto Galera are home to the largest number of marine species in the Asia region and considered by many to be the centre of the World's marine bio-diversity. The shallow coastal waters are ideal for beginners and perfect for those looking for macro-life. Slightly further out the stronger currents provide exhilarating drift dives for more advanced divers. Getting There

Our Puerto Galera Resorts are reached by an easy 2-3 hour road / boat journey from Manila. An expressway from Manila runs due south to the Port of Batangas. From there it is a 45-60 minute fast boat ride direct to the Resort.

Weather

Puerto Galera is a year round diving destination. December through to May are generally the driest months (and also peak season) and March to May sees the warmest temperatures. We like July - October most, it can sometimes rain but there is always somewhere to dive and water temperatures and visibility are often at their best.

The Diving

Mindoro Island is separated from Luzon Island by the Verde Passage a narrow strip of water that is rich in nutrients. Often washed by strong currents the sea here is home to over 3000 species of fish, corals and other marine life and makes this one of the best places in Asia to dive.

There are over 30 dive sites within a 15-20 minute boat ride from the various Dive Centers and a further number are easily accessible on slightly longer journeys or day trips. Water visibility often reaches in excess of 25-30m and sea temperatures are usually very warm.

Especially popular for macro-life divers and photographers the waters close to Puerto Galera play host to an incredible number of small critters including pygmy seahorses, various cuttlefish, shrimps, octopus, frog fish and leaf fish. At other sites you will see turtles, jacks, snappers and passing pelagic species. For wreck divers there are several wrecks that have been specially sunk to encourage life as artificial reefs - these are ideal for both training dives and fun dives.

Beginners will find this the perfect place to start diving - our Dive Centers have training pools and the warm water and clear visibility of the sea makes this a comfortable and exciting venue to learn to dive. Experienced divers will love the drift dives, walls and steep canyons that are found along the coastline here. Perhaps the best known site here is Canyons a world class drift dive for the experienced diver. Here the currents take you along a sloping wall into three separate canyons that have formed in the reef. Here the swirling waters attract larger species of fish including trevallies, jacks and sweetlips. From time to time some larger pelagic species including sharks and rays make their way into the area as well.

Hole in the Wall close to canyons is another exciting dive when the currents pick up and you can drift fast and for some distance!

Sabang Wrecks and Alma Jane are wrecks that have been sunk to provide artificial reefs. Surrounded by large amounts of fish life and at varying depths they are ideal for both fun diving and training dives. West Escario, Coral Gardens and Monkey Point are perfect for novice divers and photographers - when the currents have picked up a little they are also a great drift dive. Full of fish life and corals these sites can be revisited several times during one stay.

Verde Island all Dive Centers feature a day trip to neighboring Verde Island at some point during their weekly schedule. One of the best dive locations in the Philippines, the walls and ledges here are dominated by fast moving currents and great visibility. For advanced divers only this is a spectacular day out and not to be missed!
